What is dye sublimation printing?
What is dye sublimation and how do these printers work?Dye sublimation printers use solid dyes in tape form on rolls. There is one tape for each of the basic printing colours - cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The print head on this type of printer uses tiny heaters to vapourise the dye which permiates the glossy surface of the paper.
A big difference with this type of printing is that because the dyes are applied to the paper in gas form, they do not form distinct dots with a hard edge like inkjet printers. Instead, the edges are softer and blend into each other. Also, as the gaseous dye infuses in to the paper giving a more colour-fast picture.
