top : Help and Information : Choosing a new printer
What type of printer should I choose?
There are two main printing technologies - inkjet and laser.
Inkjet (and also bubble jet) printing is where liquid ink is squirted onto the paper in thousands of tiny dots to form the printout.
Laser printing is where a laser is shone onto a photosensitive drum which is used to pick up solid toner ink particles which are deposited on the paper and then baked on using a heater.
Inkjet printers usually print in colour whereas laser printers usually print in black and white.
Whether you should choose a laser printer or inkjet printer depends on the volume of prints you do. The cost per page for a laser printer is usually significantly cheaper than that of an inkjet printer. However, laser printers are more expensive to buy.
