Apple Colour Stylewriter 1200 Printer Review

Expert review of the Apple Colour Stylewriter 1200 printer 08 August 2012

Our Verdict:

The Apple Colour Stylewriter 1200 was among the primary consumer-targeted printers of Apple. The Colour Stylewriter 1200 was once notable for speed, its fairly compact size, and the lightweight frame, but it is sluggish by today's standards and quite outdated for all current operating systems.

Design

An understated frame makes the Apple Colour Stylewriter 1200 suitable for personal users and small offices that need a basic printer for their standard printing needs. It runs on 128KB of RAM, which allows it to print up to 3ppm. The device is compatible with QuickDraw language and connects to a computer via a serial port. The Colour Stylewriter 1200 inkjet printer measures 7 inches tall, 7.9 inches deep, and 13.6 inches wide, and weighs approximately 3kg.

Advantages

This colour inkjet printer is significantly faster than its predecessors. The Apple Colour Stylewriter 1200 printer is also notably light and easy to carry, and user-friendly to operate on-screen. Users can easily set-up this device and the compact design makes it easy to pack and bring along when they need to travel. Paper handling is quite versatile on the Apple Colour Stylewriter 1200, too, because it can handle transparencies and envelopes apart from standard sheets of paper.

Disadvantages

Users do not have the option to expand the memory of the Apple Colour Stylewriter 1200. By today's standards, the print speed of 3ppm is slow. The low resolution in 360dpi is outdated for high-quality printing needs. The Apple 1200 Colour Stylewriter also uses pricey inks and isn't certified for energy efficiency, which makes it expensive to operate in the long-run. Another problem with the device is the specific build and design for Apple computers only.
