Epson Stylus Photo PX660 Printer Review
Expert review of the Epson Stylus Photo PX660 printer 04 May, 2012
Our Verdict:
The Epson Stylus Photo PX660 belongs to the company's line of midrange multifunction inkjet printers with advanced specs that promise speed and efficiency in photo printing and document handling. Aimed at the small office and discerning photographers, the Epson PX660 printer is much cheaper to run than its predecessors, but the high initial cost is a turn-off for most users.
Design
The printer is integrated with Epson Micro Piezo print heads and a 6-colour ink system, so it is cheaper to run than other multifunction printers. Users can connect the device to a computer via USB only. The CIS A4 colour scanner supports resolutions at up to 1200x2400dpi for accurate output. The Epson Stylus Photo PX660 can accommodate up to 120 sheets of paper at a time with a single paper tray. There is a memory card reader that can support common memory cards on-board, along with a PictBridge port for direct printing needs. Users can preview their pictures on the 6.3cm colour LCD screen and navigate the controls easily with the intuitive touch panel.
Advantages
The Epson Stylus Photo PX660 uses dye-based Claria inks, which are considered high-yield because they consume only 1.5 picoliters of droplets. The built-in direct printing (options like PictBridge and a memory card reader) help users save time. The Epson Stylus Photo PX-660 is user-friendly for amateur photographers and easy to operate because of the touch panel, and it is possible to print labels directly onto a disk.
Disadvantages
Despite the compact appearance, the Epson Stylus Photo PX660 is actually a heavyweight, weighing 8.5kg. The actual print speeds are much slower than what Epson is claiming. Tests revealed that instead of the claimed 37 ppm in monochrome and 38 ppm in colour, the speeds only ranged between 3.3ppm and 15.8ppm. Another drawback on the Stylus Photo PX660 is the high initial cost.
