I have a Deskjet 1050 J410 series printer which constantly informs me that the cartridges I've installed are not recognised. The cartridges I have are the black HP 301, tri-colour HP 301 and black HP 21XL?

  • Unfortunately, the black HP 21XL cartridge is not compatible with the Deskjet 1050 printer so this cartridge won't be recognised at any time by the printer. However, the HP 301 inks are compatible so they should work when correctly installed into the Deskjet 1050.

  • We would recommend that you contact the supplier of your printer, or contact HP directly for advice with this issue.

    A new printer is usually supplied with 'starter' or 'introductory' cartridges that only contain a minimal amount of ink. This may be the reason that you have only been able to print a few pages with these cartridges.

  • Both are black ink cartridges. However, the high capacity HP 301XL cartridge contains more ink than the standard capacity HP 301 ink cartridge and should give you a cheaper cost-per-page. If you're a frequent user of the printer you may find that using HP 301XL's is more cost-effective than using HP 301's.

  • You should be able to change the print quality produced by your Deskjet 1050 printer. These options are usually called "draft, greyscale, high quality" etc. To get to these options you need to go to the software which came with your printer or by opening a document selecting FILE > PRINT PROPERTIES.

I bought a black ink cartridge, from Tesco, for my HP 1050 printer (the previous cartridge had the number 301 on it). The one I bought had the number 300 on the front case, but a code ending in 301 on the back. It fits exactly into the printer, but doesnt recognise it as a valid cartridge - surely it should work???

  • I am very sorry to hear about the problems you have experienced with this cartridge. The cartridges you need for the HP Deskjet 1050 are the HP 301 cartridges. There are another range of printers that use the HP 300 cartridges, but these cartridges will not work in your printer, they may still fit but the printer will not be able to recognise them.

If you do purchase a kit and want to try refilling, I would recommend refilling whilst the cartridge is reporting low not empty but I cannot guarantee your success.

Our Verdict:  

HP Deskjet 1050 ink cartridges 

Whether you're printing large text documents, scanning old holiday snaps or photocopying articles, the HP 1050 inkjet printer has it covered. The all-in-one Deskjet 1050 has a great spec at an even greater price. With a built in photocopier and a high quality scanner, the 1050 is the ultimate home office companion. The inkjet printer is at the lower end of the market but don't let this put you off as the print quality is second-to-none.

Design

HP won't win any design awards for the 1050. The matte-black printer is classically designed with a stand-up paper feed tray at the back and output tray at the front, both of which can be folded away if you are short on space or need to transport the printer. The top of the printer has black and colour photocopy buttons and an on/off switch. There are also three orange indicators, two for low ink and one for paper out. The HP 1050 printer is the perfect size for any bedroom or home office and is easily portable if you need to move it around.

Advantages

Despite its price, the print quality of the HP 1050 is fantastic. Plain text documents look great - characters look clear and sharp even when using smaller font sizes. Draft documents aren't dotty and only show slight fuzz. Colour graphics are bright and true to colour thanks to the high quality HP 1050 ink cartridge. Photo print is also of a reasonable quality, although not as vibrant as some its rivals. If you are after fantastic print quality on a budget then look no further!

Disadvantages

One of the downfalls of the HP 1050 is the print speed. At just 5 pages per minute for black and 4 pages per minute for colour, the HP is not ideal if you want to print large documents or find yourself printing regularly. The lack of wireless connectivity may also pose a problem, especially if you have a number of devices you want to connect from.
