HP Deskjet 5168 Printer Review
Expert review of the HP Deskjet 5168 printer
10 April 2012
Aimed at users seeking a colour printer for a small office or personal use, the HP Deskjet 5168 is a basic device with handy bonus features. It promises good quality photo output with its advanced six-ink system and higher productivity with its duplexer and additional paper tray, but is still plagued by problems such as sluggishness, constant lags, and lack of essential features.
For an inkjet printer, the HP Deskjet 5168 is rather heavy at 11.7 lbs, but is surprisingly compact, being 5.7 inches tall and 17.7 inches wide. It is hooked physically to your PC via a USB 2.0 cable and operates rather quietly at 39.6 dB in 'best' mode. The main paper tray's capacity is 150 sheets while the output tray can handle 50 sheets (both for plain paper). You can use an optional 250-sheet tray for high-volume printing. The HP Deskjet 5168 uses thermal inkjet technology with an optional 6-ink system if you want more vibrant graphics and crisper text.
Though the HP Deskjet 5168 seems like a simple colour inkjet printer, it comes with a few perks that make it more efficient. It has an optional duplexer, and the software is bundled with 5 print modes. It is possible to print borderless on an 8.5x11-inch photo paper, and the duty cycle of 3,000 pages per month is quite generous for such a small printer. The print speed in 'fast draft' mode is 19 ppm in black. The HP Deskjet 5168 also supports a wide variety of media types including envelopes, greeting cards, index cards, labels, banner, and transparencies. The auto-off feature lets you save energy, as it automatically switches the printer to 'energy efficient' mode when you leave it unused for 30 minutes.
The HP Deskjet 5168 slows down when you have to print in 'normal' or 'best' mode, making it rather inefficient for high-volume printing. The output tray's capacity is quite low. Inks also tend to be expensive, making the printer pricey in the long-run.
