HP Deskjet 5850 Printer Review
Expert review of the HP Deskjet 5850 printer
01 March 2012
Being network-ready and possessing wireless capabilities, the HP Deskjet 5850 is aimed at tech-savvy users that require a user-friendly and easy to set-up printer for their small network at home or in the office. However, the HP Deskjet 5850 is not the fastest printer around. The print quality of documents is not very impressive, either.
The HP Deskjet 5850 is well-designed. The RAM (16 MB) is double what its predecessors had. Users can integrate this printer into either a wired or wireless network with its Ethernet and RJ-45 connection options. It is quite compact (12.4 inches in diameter) and light (13.9 lbs). There is a useful status light on the printer's body to indicate that it is ready to transmit or receive data via Wi-Fi.
The wireless capabilities of the HP Deskjet 5850 allow users to print documents and pictures directly from their computer even without physically connecting it to the printer. The light indicator does not leave users guessing whether the HP Deskjet 5850 is already connected to a Wi-Fi network or not. The monochrome print speed slightly improved at 15 ppm in 'normal' mode.
To get the most out of the HP Deskjet 5850, you may need to buy optional accessories such as a duplexer and an additional paper tray. On its own, the printer can only handle 50 sheets on its output tray – certainly not a lot when compared to other inkjet printers by competing manufacturers. Printing coloured photos is slow at only 5 ppm in 'normal' and 0.9 ppm in 'best.' The consumables are quite expensive, too, yet the overall print quality remains average.
