Kodak PM100 Printer Review
Expert review of the Kodak PM100 printer
05 November 2012
This high-resolution colour inkjet printer from Lexmark is optimised for Kodak photo papers, but is versatile enough for custom-sized and speciality media. The Kodak PM100 inkjet printer improves personal productivity with built-in memory card slots and the option to connect a Zip drive to the parallel port for direct printing purposes. However, the Kodak Personal Picture Maker PM100 is only designed for use with computers running on Windows, and the overall image quality is sub-par when compared to other inkjet printers from the competition like HP, Epson and Canon.
The compact desktop form factor of the Kodak PM100 printer makes it lightweight at 3Kg. The Kodak PM-100 measures 7.2 inches tall, 16.2 inches wide, and 8.4 inches deep. It mainly relies on wired connectivity with a parallel interface for Windows operating systems. The left topmost part is the control panel with a mono TFT screen, and adjacent to that area are the memory card slots. The PM100 uses a straight media path, in which paper feeds from the rear input tray and exits in front.
It specialises in photo printing, so the Kodak PM100 can function as a standalone device and print directly from SM and CF memory cards as well as ZIP drives. Media handling is rather versatile, so users can print on 4x6-inch photo paper and letter-sized media, as well as iron-on transfers and transparencies. The rear area of the Kodak PM100 Personal Picture Maker printer is home to a cartridge cradle, which holds the optional ink cartridge when it needs to be switched with black ink or the colour ink.
Print quality is a disappointment in the Kodak PM100 printer and it doesn't deliver as advertised. The absence of USB support is another issue, along with lack of compatibility with Mac computers. Overall, the Kodak PM100 is an outdated model that is overshadowed by newer photo printers from the competition in terms of speed, performance, and efficiency. The display screen cannot preview photos, so users need to print an index sheet, which wastes ink. Unfortunately, with the Kodak PM100 being an older model, the Kodak PM100 colour ink cartridge can be hard to source.
