Xerox Phaser 8550 Printer Review
Expert review of the Xerox Phaser 8550 printer
12 November 2012
Built for small and mid-size offices, the Xerox Phaser 8550 solid ink printer is an ideal solution for any office printing need. It is capable of producing as many as 24 pages per minute and it offers maximum print resolutions up to 2400 dpi. The Xerox Phaser 8550 printer is more suitable for professional printing than the previous 8500 model, since it offers higher maximum resolutions, though print speeds remain the same. The Phaser 8550 is a basic colour printer that is easy to maintain, but is quite sluggish.
The Xerox Phaser 8550 solid inkjet printer is basically the same machine as the Phaser 8500, the only difference lies in the print engine. It uses a 2400 dpi print engine, instead of 600 dpi, which gives its outputs higher resolutions. The Xerox Phaser 8550 has a 600 MHz processor, and a 1 GB memory, while an optional 20 GB hard disk can be purchased. Built for heavy duty use, this device has a monthly capacity of up to 85,000 impressions.
In addition to higher-resolution printing, the Xerox Phaser 8550 boasts a comprehensive software package, which includes True Adobe Postscript 3 and PCL5c, which allows the printer to recognise more than 200 fonts. The Xerox 8550 colour printer requires practically no warm up time, while the first page of documents come out in as little as 6 seconds. The Xerox Phaser 8550 solid ink sticks are usually sold in packs of three and deliver good value for money.
If there is one major disadvantage that can be attributed to the Xerox Phaser 8550 inkjet printer, it would have to be its sluggish print speeds. While 24 ppm is not exactly a slow print rate, other devices from Xerox can do better.
