Publisher Blackwell who specializes in academic books will be the first company to offer Espresso Book Machines (EBM) in the UK. The company will start using the machine for printing books owned by On Demand Publications.
The publisher is likely to pilot the project in autumn at one of the retail outlets. If successful, it will be launched across all 60 stores in the UK.
The Espresso Book Machine (EBM) is a printing press that will print and deliver physical books within minutes and works much like a soda vending machine. The result is the print on demand principle, but without a publisher directly involved. (via Wiki)
The EBM can print a 300 page book in 7 minutes. The next upgrade is expected to complete the same job in 3 minutes.
EBM uses Konica Minolta Magicolor 7200 colour laser printer. It can print books with a maximum size of 279 x 431mm. The machine accepts PDF and Postscript files as inputs.
Vince Gunn, CEO of Blackwell said - “This is a fantastic opportunity. We can sell to demand with no risk to inventory and there is an opportunity to create incremental revenue streams for ourselves and publishers.”
