Canon may not be the leader in laser printing, but their startup laser printer, i-SENSYS LBP5100 is worth every penny, well, almost. It’s a basic colour laser printer with no multi-functional capabilities. The design is compact with full frontal operation which would be welcome in most offices.
There has been no doubts over Canon’s capability of spitting out quality prints from an inkjet printer, but laser printing is a different ball game altogether. Considering that the manufacturer is yet to get a hold of the market suggests that the company has a long way to go with its laser printer capabilities. On this printer, Canon claims to produce prints having a best resolution of 9600 X 600 dpi which is pretty much the standard for laser printers today.
Printing speed is average at 12 pages per minute for monochrome and 10 pages per minute for colour. The first print ejects out in approximately 20 seconds from the moment the printer is powered ON. When the printer is in standby mode, revival to spit out prints is almost instantaneous.
Being a startup printer, there are not many features on LBP5100. Availability of automatic duplex printing, the most desired functionality in printers today is present on this system. The lack of standard networking is baffling, although Canon offers an optional kit to fill this void.
The i-SENSYS LBP5100 carries a price tag of £309 which is probably one hundred pounds on the higher side for a printer that has just the prints to offer with no additional features.
