Custom Waterproof Maps

Adventure PaperWe have enhanced our mapping tools by moving out of paper maps to either GPS locators or maps on cell phones. But, not everyone fancies the electronic device leading their way and still prefers to put their index finger over a paper map and locate places. There are chances that paper maps could get destroyed when drenched in rain or if it falls in a puddle of water during backpacking. The answer is always round the corner; waterproof maps.

National Geographic has introduced Adventure Paper, a waterproof paper which can be printed on, using any decent inkjet printer. This paper is projected to withstand against rigorous weather and is tear resistant and temperature resistant. It does not work with laser printers.

David Andersen of Backpack Gear Test has tested Adventure Paper and has provided a detailed experience report. He used a Canon S820 Photo quality printer and here’s an excerpt: I have tested the Adventure Paper in rain and I have also exposed it to salt water while sea kayaking. It appears to be unaffected in either case. I have also subjected it to hamburger grease, mustard, barbeque sauce, soy sauce, pizza grease, barbeque potato chips and various sorts of less tasty goo while in the field. These all washed off with at the worst, minor stains, and most of them wiped off completely.

I love food and I have started to think with my stomach, I can see Adventure Paper being used in restaurants to print menu cards.
