We have probably just seen it all, inkjet printers being used to print solar cells, blood vessels amongst many others. Not quite everything, latest reports coming in from Japan suggests that the inkjet printing technology will be leveraged to produce OLED TV panels.
What is OLED? Organic Light Emitting diode technology uses organic cells to produce light emitting diodes. Its light producing layer is built with organic compounds which is deposited on a polymer substance. This deposition is done in a matrix of rows and columns, and our guess is that the inkjet printers would be used in depositing organic compounds on the polymer substance.
The technology of using an inkjet printer for deposition was unveiled at Print Electronics Show in Tokyo, Japan, by Panasonic Electric Works and the manufacturer calls it slit coating method.
Panasonic states that the use of new technology enables them to price TVs cheaper than the current technology employed. Its not all about economics, as the proposed technology can produce higher luminance and colour rendering. In fact, they go on to state that the colour rendering index (CRI) would be at 95 as opposed to higher 80s with the present standard fluorescent illumination technology.
