Portable Photo Printers Put to Test

Five latest compact photo printers were put to test by an author at Times Online and the results are on expected lines. The printers chosen come from varying technologies ranging from dye sublimation to inkjets, along with thermal as well.

HP Photosmart A636, based on inkjet technology performed decently as far as the print quality was concerned. Printing speed was turtle-like at 82 seconds per 6” X 4” pic. Printer is capable of printing on various sizes such as 7” X 5” and 12” X 4” and is loaded with tons of features. Cost per print at 18p.

ES20SONY DPP-FP95 delivered good quality prints. Controls available on the printer are easily navigable, making it a user-friendly. Print speed was excellent at 44seconds a 4” X 6” photo. Cost per print at 17p.

Polaroid Pogo printer which still falls in the luxury category rated badly with the print quality and also each 3”X2” print was worth 27p. Fuji Finepix QS7, a dye sub printer performed badly with its quality and the printer lacked all the popular features. Cost per print was also overboard at 30p per print.

The winner, on expected lines is a Canon with its Selphy ES20. This dye sub printer produces excellent prints but at the cost of printing speed which is lame at 79 seconds per print. However, it makes up with an economical printer cost as well as printing cost at 15p per print.
