Review : Kyocera Mita FS-C5200DN Colour Laser Printer

The Kyocera Mita FS-C5200DN is a startup colour laser printer. This solution is a dedicated laser printer unlike most others that come with multi-functions. The printer offers a best printing resolution of 9600 X 600 dpi and a printing speed of 21ppm for both monochrome and colour. Connectivities are through USB and Ethernet, and this printer is capable of automatic duplex printing. It carries a price tag of £450.

The printer is designed by FA Porsche, comes with a cream and dark gray case and has a tallish design to it. The tall design can be attributed to the extra large 500-sheet paper tray. The tray doubles up to take a further 150 sheets of plain paper or special media such as envelopes or overhead transparencies.

Text prints are top notch with the quality of prints very clean and precisely cut. Colour graphics is a little disappointing as halo effect was observed on prints containing black text over coloured backgrounds. Photo prints are good for this segment of printers.

The claimed and actual printing speeds are not far off unlike the case with most printers. It was observed that the printer was capable of spitting out 18ppm whereas the claimed rates are just a little over at 21ppm. Duplex printing speed is above average at 10ppm.

Kyocera Mita claims that the low printing costs as one of the strengths. Taking into consideration, the price of paper and the Kyocera toner, the price per black print was calculated as 1.84p and 6.61p for colour. This is far better than most other colour lasers we have seen in the recent past.

The Kyocera Mita FS-C5200DN is a good printer overall with good print quality, great printing speeds and most importantly, a low cost per print. It has a good paper handling capacity and with only the toner as a consumable, the printer is more than handy and is almost maintenance free.
