Review: Lexmark E260dn Startup Laser Printer

e260dnThe latest startup laser printer in town, Lexmark’s E260dn is fast catching onto businesses who are looking for a fast basic printer that comes at a moderate product price. It matches eye to eye with some of the medium segment printers with printing resolution at 1200 x 1200 dpi. It is powered by a 400MHz processor and prints at a lightning 35ppm. First page emerges out within 7 seconds which is probably the fastest for any printer in this segment. It comes with built-in networking along with USB and Parallel ports.

Text prints emerging from this printer are very good but just a tad behind from being excellent. Curves are sharp and so is the graphics. The gradations on greyscale graphics provide us ample proof that this printer is far above an average basic startup printer. However, when photos were printed off it, grains were visible easily to the naked eye; at the same time, this printer is not designed to print photographs, yet we feel that a printer should be tested with all possible combinations.

Printing speed was far behind the claimed speeds. Running a 20 page speed test showed that the actual speed of the printer lies in the earlier twenties pages per minute and not 35 as claimed by Lexmark. Exaggerating print speeds is common perennial problem with all manufacturers though!

The printer costs a paltry £120 but printing costs on this printer are forgettable. It is at a whopping price of 3.4p for a single A4 print including the price of paper which is one of the most expensive prints in the market.

Cost cutting is the phrase of the day for most companies around the globe. With print prices such as this, it is highly unlikely that anybody would go for a printer that drains your pockets faster than pay cuts, even with great features and excellent print quality.
