Review : Ricoh Aficio SP 4100N Mono Laser Printer

Ricoh Aficio SP 4100NRicoh Aficio SP 4100N is a monochrome laser printer and carries a price tag of around £400. The manufacturer has targeted this printer at large workgroups. The printer comes with USB and Ethernet inputs and can carry Wi-Fi optionally along with Duplex printing for an extra price.

A review conducted by TR shows that the printing quality for black text was good but the image prints looked out of sorts. An image print taken, displays most of the grayscale lost with many of the darker tones veering to black and obvious traces of micro-banding. A monochrome printer unable to print images decently and priced high is certainly a no-noer.

Ricoh claims that SP 4100N prints at a speed of 31ppm and the tests conducted showed it comes close at 25ppm which is respectable.

Printer consumables include toner cartridge and a maintenance kit. The toner cartridge can print 15,000 prints before it needs a replacement while the maintenance kit needs replacement after 90,000 prints, and both of them fall on the expensive side of things. Keeping these things into consideration, the calculated cost per print is 1.99p including paper which is at least 0.2p more than its competitors.

Negatives overrun the positives in this printer. While the printer speed is good and text printing at par with its competitors, its sluggish image prints and a high cost-per-print makes it a printer not worthy of buying (and using).
