Review : Samsung CLP-315 Colour Laser Printer

Earlier this year, Samsung announced the arrival of a host of economical colour laser printers. CLP-315 was one of them.

CLP-315 is clothed in glossy black and the size resembles an inkjet printer more than a laser. It’s compact, stylish and more importantly inexpensive. It is targetted for personal use in organisations. It’s not network ready but its upgrade CLP-315W is.

The manufacturer claims that the printer spits out prints at a speed of 17ppm for black and 4ppm for colour. A review conducted by TR finds that the printing speed for black is much lesser at around 13ppm while the colour printing speed is at par. The lower printing speed for colour could be attributed towards the compactness of the printer, as the drum needs to complete five rotations to print a colour document/image.

Monochrome print quality from CLP-315 is good, with thick, dark characters and bold, bright colours. There were instances when the prints appeared too bright and at times, text overlaid on colour shows toner spatter and poor registration, giving a slightly blotchy appearance. The photo print is well below par as the colour distribution is not uniform in terms of brightness.

This is an economical printer and it costs around £130 including VAT. But, there’s a catch. Printer consumables are doubly expensive. Capacity on the black toner cartridge is 1500 ISO pages and 1000 ISO pages for colour. Imaging drum needs replacement every 24,000 prints. Calculating the printing cost including the paper charges, black prints cost a whopping 3.27p and colour prints at a disturbing 11.82p. Is this printer really economical? I don’t think so. This is daylight robbery.
