Resources are of utmost importance, especially the ones derived naturally like trees from forests. In a bid to conserve paper, Toshiba has a printer in its ranks which can erase the prints and rewrite several times.
Toshiba’s B-SX8R is a monstrous printer which is capable of erasing and reprinting on the same sheet of paper. The process can be carried out at least 500 times on a single sheet of paper.
The technology behind the printer is thermal based. It involves heat-activated pigments that turn black at over 180 degrees. When the printed sheet is reheated at 400 degrees, the pigments turn back to white, which practically erases the content.
The printer’s humongous size makes it impractical to use. The price of the printer is over £5000 and each sheet of thermal paper is estimated to cost over £5. Thumbs down to this one…
A similar concept was innovated by Xerox Corporation that used photosensitive paper. The photosensitive paper turns dark when exposed to UV light and hence the print. The print stays until 16 hours and before 24 hours, the paper is blank as new. Also, if there is a need to erase the prints before the stipulated time, the paper can be run through an eraser that could do the job at any desired hour.
