This is a question that my graphic designer flat-mate used to ask me. I had no idea initially until I dug for clues and it asserts that Googling does help, really.
Here are some reasons why a Mac user might find it difficult to locate a printer shared on Windows:
- Mac has the limitation of not locating printers with printer names longer than 12 characters. So, if your printer’s name is quite long, try to bring it down fewer than 12 characters.
- Ensure that the shared printer is not hidden on the network. There is a possibility that certain printers are not shared on a network to protect against spammers where only selected users are authorized to print.
- Both computers need to be on the same subnet for Macs to locate shared printers. Alternatively, printers can be added manually on a Mac by entering the Windows machine’s IP address.
- If there are multiple printers shared on a Windows machine, any printer with the description containing a RETURN key, the printers that appear after it will not be displayed.
