Is the HL-2030 always a laser printer or is there a none laser version that requires a different ink cartridge?

  • According to the information we have, the Brother HL-2030 is a mono laser printer that requires the use of black toner cartridges. We aren't aware of any inkjet printer model which is manufactured by Brother under the same name as this model.

Our Verdict:  

Brother HL-2030 toner cartridges 

The Brother HL-2030 is a compact black and white laser printer well worth its low cost. While it has some trouble printing images, like most laser printers, the text quality is excellent, and the cartridges have a long lifespan. The speed of 16 pages per minute and the 2,400 x 600 dpi resolution mean that this printer would work well for households and home offices that do not need to print anything too graphic-heavy.

Design

The Brother HL-2030 toner is quite small, and will fit easily on the desk in even a crowded home office. The fold-out extension in the bay for printed pages can keep them from falling off of the printer, although for smaller documents this wasn't really an issue. The paper tray has a capacity of 250 sheets, although there is a 500 sheet expansion available for added cost. This printer only has a USB port to plug into the computer, which may present connectivity options for some people.

Advantages

Installation couldn't be easier. Simply plug the printer in, hook it up to the computer, run the installation software, and it's ready to go. Each Brother HL-2030 toner cartridge can print around 2,500 sheets of paper, which is a rather good capacity for a single person printer. High capacity Brother HL-2030 toner is available with a yield of 5,000 pages. The speed of printing text documents is much faster than rivals' printers, and the printer does a decent approximation of converting colour images to grey scale.

Disadvantages

Printing large graphics tends to result in colour banding, reducing the print quality. Pages printed out often end up curling at the edges, which can be problematic for business documents, school reports, and other documents that must be circulated. While the printer cartridges have a generous capacity, they are expensive compared to other LaserJet cartridges.
