Expert review of the Brother HL-5100 printer
The Brother HL-5100 is a monochrome laser printer. With a small footprint, it is easy to place in a small or home office, where the rapid printing speeds will increase efficiency. This printer is recommended for a business or individual that needs good-quality, clear text but only needs to print graphics and photographs for internal use. Duplex printing, high-yield cartridges and cost control technology ensure the running costs for this printer are low. For a good no-frills monochrome printer, this is a good option. However, if space is limited and you require other functions, such as colour printing, copying, scanning or faxing, this printer will not meet the requirements.
Design
The Brother HL-5100 is a dark-coloured device that measures 373 x 388 x 255mm. Print speeds are 40ppm, print resolution is 1,200 dpi and the monthly duty cycle is 50,000 pages. Paper is stored in a 250-sheet input tray and a 50-sheet multipurpose tray, with the option to increase capacity if required. On the top of the device is a control panel, including a one-line backlit LCD display. The printer connects to the computer via a USB or serial interface.
Advantages
With duplex printing as standard, the Brother HL-5100 saves money and reduces paper wastage. The new build technology makes this a reliable machine. High-yield toner cartridges reduce the printer downtime. Brother’s Print Smart Cost Control feature can be used to reduce printing costs. Text is printed to a good professional standard.
Disadvantages

Graphics printing is fine for internal use but falls short of the quality that is required for commercial use.
