Brother HL-5250D Printer Review
Expert review of the Brother HL-5250D printer
02 May 2012
Because of its versatile Ethernet option and double-sided printing capabilities, the HL-5250D is designed to perform in a small workgroup or a home network that requires an affordable laser printer. However, the Brother HL-5250D may be outdated for some users because it can only print in monochrome.
Shaped like a cube, the Brother HL-5250D has an industrial appeal and measures 9.7 inches tall, 15.1 inches deep, and 14.6 inches wide and weighs almost 10 kg. Its runs on B/W laser technology with a standard 32MB of RAM integrated with a 266MHz NEC VR5500 processor, so it prints fast. The Brother HL-5250D is ENERGY STAR-qualified, emits 53 dB of noise when printing, and a maximum duty cycle of 20,000 pages per month.
Users love the duplexer and the cheap toners of this laser printer. It can print at a maximum speed of 30 ppm and its input capacity is 250 sheets, which is good for bulk printing. The Brother HL5250D is network-ready with the 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet interface, but users have the option to connect the printer to the computer via USB 2.0 or a parallel connection. The standard memory of the Brother HL-5250D is expandable. Output looks flawless at a resolution of 1200x1200 dpi.
The Brother HL-5250D only prints in monochrome, so it may not be a good choice for home users and some workgroups. The industrial design looks outdated, and users that require the additional 250-sheet paper tray will be put off by the extra expense. The Brother HL5250D printer also tends to be rather loud and may interrupt a quiet work space.
