Canon GP160 Printer Review
Expert review of the Canon GP160 printer 21 April, 2011
Our Verdict:
As one of Canon's larger machines, the GP160 has quite a few decent features for an entry-level, multi-purpose machine. While the specs may leave something to be desired in most cases, there are a few surprising perks to this all in one printer. As it is also manufactured by Canon, a company that produces some very impressive pieces of technology, it is definitely worth consideration as a low cost printer.
Design
The GP160 is a standalone printer that will need a sizable office to fit inside. There are three storage trays stacked at the bottom of the printer, while the hatch for the 1,100 sheet input tray is located just above them. The internal memory is 8MB standard with an option for a 16MB upgrade. This also includes the active job memory, which can handle 4MB maximum with the standard model and 20MB with the upgraded model. The face of the printer has a simple LCD screen, pin pad, and other function buttons. A small hatch along the side accesses the combination Canon GP160 toner cartridges.
Advantages
With so many companies forgetting about the importance of true compatibility, the GP160 is a fresh reminder. The driver works with nearly any operating system has has plugs and sockets for almost any cable. The unique design of the drum and Canon GP160 toner cartridges also makes maintenance a breeze. Producing black text prints at about 16 pages per minute, it also rates well in the speed department. The other useful feature is the charged roller system which minimises ozone emissions and energy use, a nice feature for the eco-friendly office.
Disadvantages
With the GP160F currently on the market, the GP160 seems a little outdated. The GP160F features more memory, a quicker network connection, and full fax capabilities. This means that for a slightly higher price tag, a medium office can replace their entry-level printer with a true multi-purpose printer. As with many larger machines, it takes anywhere from 20 to 40 seconds to warm up the machine and produce the first print. This can become irksome if businesses will be running smaller jobs throughout the day instead of continuously using the printer.
