Canon i-SENSYS MF-4870dn Printer Review

Expert review of the Canon i-SENSYS MF-4870dn printer 01 October 2012

Our Verdict:
Canon i-SENSYS MF-4870dn

The Canon i-SENSYS MF-4870dn is a network-ready multifunction printer for small workgroups that need an easy-to-use and easy to share device. It offers one-touch operational keys and other timesaving features, which make it more efficient to run and operate, yet it could be better if it had a less cluttered control panel.

Design

The Canon i-SENSYS MF4870dn is boxy and slightly heavy, standing 623mm tall and 593mm in diameter and weighing 12.5Kg. It runs on 128MB of standard memory and the main interfaces include Ethernet and high-speed USB 2.0. Media handling is limited to the 250-sheet input tray, a 35-sheet automatic document feeder, and a single manual feed slot, while the output tray can accommodate up to 100 sheets.

Advantages

Print speeds can reach up to 25 pages per min and text documents appear crisp. Graphics may be enhanced using the automatic image refinement feature. The Canon i-SENSYS MF-4870dn boasts a toner save mode. There is a colour scanner and super G3-compatible 33.6Kbps fax machine. Users can configure automatic two-sided printing in the Canon MF-4870dn and leave the device unattended when the ADF is activated. A small workgroup can share the printer without compromising speed and performance.

Disadvantages

The iSENSYS MF4870dn only prints in monochrome, which limits its usefulness in creative workgroups that require colour in their output. The busy control panel can be overwhelming to operate especially for first-time users. The standard print resolution is only 600x600dpi, so complicated and high quality graphics may lose some of their detail. The Canon i-SENSYS MF-4870dn doesn't offer a lot in terms of expandability options.
