An improved version of the LaserJet 4M, the HP LaserJet 4M Plus laser printer was first released in 1994, but refurbished versions can still be seen in online retail sites. It has an improved print engine, which increased the original printing speed from 8 ppm to 12 ppm. Though speed is not the strongest point of the HP 4M LaserJet Plus printer, the device became popular for its optional duplex printing accessory, which allows users to print on both sides of paper automatically. This model is a good choice for small to medium offices though it can only print monochrome documents and graphics.

Design

The HP LaserJet 4M Plus mono laser printer is basically the same machine as the LaserJet 4M, only with some technical improvements. The HP 4M Plus laser printer maintains the slightly bulky design, but offers a faster processor (25 MHz) and power saving features, which were not included in the original version. The auto duplex accessory is not an integral part of the HP LaserJet 4M Plus printer, which means users will have to purchase the tool separately.

Advantages

In addition to faster data processing and improved speeds, the HP LaserJet 4M Plus offers excellent print quality. Documents are finely detailed and while graphics prints are not as impressive using the older 4M version, with the 4M Plus, there are increased greyscale tones, which greatly improve graphics quality. The HP LaserJet 4M Plus toner configuration is similar to earlier versions with either a black HP 98A toner or high capacity black HP 98X cartridge able to fit this machine.

Disadvantages

Even with the additional 4 pages per minute capacity, the LaserJet 4M Plus printer is still relatively slow for a laser printer. Other models in the same range can print upwards of 30 pages per minute, which offers better productivity.
