Our Verdict:
When Hewlett Packard launched the LaserJet P100x series, it set a new standard for quality photo printing in a home environment. The HP LaserJet P1009 is no exception, and the only thing that held its popularity back some was that it was monochrome only. Otherwise, the HP P1009 is an extremely attractive, streamlined and compact printing machine that outputs 1,200 dpi at 17 ppm. It has room for one HP P1009 toner cartridge, a 150 sheet capacity and an 8 second warm-up time. The P1009 is network-ready with high-speed USB 2.0 ports, and it is a great option for those who don’t need to print colour and therefore don’t need the added expense.
Design
As most modern computer peripherals intended for home use do, the HP P1009 employs a dark black colour scheme. But HP also uses a metal finish-like touch to give the P1009 a sleek appeal that most peripherals don’t have, so this unit works quite well as a piece of furniture. It also has an extremely small footprint, and it is extremely lightweight, which makes it a good option for those that need portability. Perhaps the only issue with the design is the noise level it produces: 63.0 db. That level is quite loud even for cheap printers, and it could prove bothersome to sensitive listeners. On-board controls are minimal, but they get the job done for these purposes.
Advantages
If you need a reliable, durable printer for home use and don’t have a need to print colour, then there’s not much to dislike about the HP P1009 toner printer. It delivers on all of its promises, and it’s quite cost-effective per page thanks to its reasonably priced high-yield HP P1009 toner cartridges. Since it lacks colour printing, consumers may not think of this unit as a photo printer, but it very much is. In fact, the LaserJet P1009 produces stunning quality in its black-and-white prints that is on par with any other printer in the P100x series.
Disadvantages
The biggest disadvantage to the P1009 is the sound level. It’s not just noisy; it screams. While this may not be a big deal in a home office, it can be an issue if you put it in a living area in your home or are using it in a dorm room. If not maintained, this sound will worsen over time, so it’s important that you clean it regularly to avoid that.
