Konica Minolta Magicolour 5450 Printer Review
Expert review of the Konica Minolta Magicolour 5450 printer 13 April, 2011
Our Verdict:
With its Magicolour printer line, Konica Minolta has earned a reputation for colour laser printers well suited to demanding business environments. The Konica Minolta Magicolour 5450 model is one of the most expensive in the Magicolour family, and while it doesn’t offer the pure value of the 4650, it was nearly as successful. The 5450 prints both colour and black and white at a rate of 27 pages per minute and a resolution of 9,600 x 600 dpi. It has 256 MB of memory default, and you can upgrade it to as much as 1 GB for highly complex print jobs. The 5450 has a 500 sheet paper input tray and a 100 sheet multipurpose tray. Konica Minolta rates the monthly duty cycle at 60,000 pages, and the standard Konica Minolta 5450 toner cartridge yields 6,000 or 12,000 pages.
Design
The Konica Minolta 5450 is an old-fashioned business cube with hard corners and strong, formal lines. Compared to modern machines, it looks a bit out-dated, but those looks are deceiving in terms of performance. The nicest aspect of the design is that it has a lot of space to work with inside, which means you’ll have no problem cleaning it, fixing paper jams or replacing the Konica Minolta 5450 toners. Another nice feature is the raised control panel up top. It is essentially one large LCD display titled toward the user, and there is a wheel-style button array that lets you navigate through the on-screen menu system.
Advantages
The biggest advantage to the Magicolour 5450 is the quality of its colour and photo prints. It’s difficult to find this level of colour quality without stepping up into the behemoth class. The 5450 is also quite versatile. You can upgrade memory, paper capacity and other aspects as needed, so the business doesn’t have to be concerned with outgrowing the device. Konica Minolta also provides toner at prices that give this machine an excellent cost-per-page.
Disadvantages
The biggest disadvantage with the Konica Minolta Magicolour 5450 is its print speed. Konica Minolta promises 27 pages per minute, and while it does reach those speeds, the actual average is probably closer to 20. And that is when printing basic black and white text documents. With colour and complex jobs, users can experience an average pages per minute as low as 10, and this is why Konica Minolta eventually discontinued this model. A small gripe is that the starter cartridge is only a 3,000-sheet yield, which is quite small on an expensive business machine like this one.
