Our Verdict:
Kyocera is one of the top manufacturers of document imaging devices, which include products such as multifunction copiers, laser printers, colour printers, and colour copiers. One of their budget products in this class is the Kyocera FS-1030D, which is a monochrome desktop printer ideal for the home office or small business.
Design
The Kyocera FS-1030D comes in a desktop form factor which measures 37.8 cm wide by 37.5 cm deep by 23.5 cm high and weighs approximately 10.4 kg. The printer delivers up to 23 pages per minute at 1,200 dpi resolution. It has a a duty cycle of 20,000 pages per month, which is plenty for most small offices. It includes a 250 sheet paper tray and additional 50 sheet multi purpose tray which can hold A4, A5, B5, Letter and custom sized papers. The printer comes with 32 MB of memory built in, which can be expanded to 288 MB via a single 100 pin DIMM slot. One of the innovative design features is the integration of the fuser, developer and drum into the printer. This means that the Kyocera FS-1030D toner is the only thing that needs to be replaced. Another useful feature is the duplex printing capability. Standard connection options included are USB and parallel ports, and networking capability can be added via an add-on card. Other available options include an additional 250 page paper feeder and wooden storage cabinet with wheels to support the unit.
Advantages
A major advantage that Kyocera boasts is a low cost of operation, since the only consumable is the Kyocera FS-1030D toner cartridge. In addition, the output quality is excellent, with text and graphics being clear and well-defined. The built-in automatic duplexer makes printing double-sided documents easy and fast, resulting in savings of both time and paper. The FS-1030D also supports many major operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS X, Unix, and Novell. Overall, the Kyocera FS-1030D is a durable, quality printer with low operating costs.
Disadvantages
The Kyocera FS-1030D does not offer networking as a standard feature. The inclusion of a parallel port in lieu of this is a terrible design choice. The printer also offers only basically functionality. It prints documents in monochrome, and that is all. You will need to look elsewhere for other basic office functions such as copying, faxing or scanning.
