Oki B410d Printer Review
Expert review of the Oki B410d printer
31 March 2011
Oki put a lot of time and effort into the B410d multi-function laser printer. This impressive machine has quite a few features that its larger brothers and sisters seemed to have overlooked, and for all of this the price will generally run at about £100 for the base model. Even at a few years old, it still remains a strong contender for one of the best low to mid-range monochrome printers.
The design of the Oki B410d toner printer seems to be based on speed and ease of use with a slew of upgrades to keep up with even a medium company or work group. Two simple trays on the front are used to access the 250 sheet input bin, which can be upgraded to an 800 sheet input bin, and the traditional Oki B410d toner cartridges which can be upgraded to high-yield 3,500 sheet cartridges. A basic LCD screen and a handful of navigational and control buttons help with quick prints and jams. The back of this printer features both parallel ports for older hook ups and a quicker USB port. The base model begins with 32MB of internal storage which can be upgraded all the way up to 288MB with a 297MHz processor.
Without any upgrades, the B410d produces decent quality black prints at an impressive 25 pages per minute. It also takes about 5 to 6 seconds for the first print to appear, making it both quick and fast. The automatic duplexer and the specialty media tray means that this is one of the cheapest multi-function machines that can be purchased with these features. The provided device driver software comes with four different programs, each which allow for easy resizing, touch ups, and single click duplexing by any computer on the network. The upgraded paper input tray options and the high-yield Oki B410d toner cartridges means that this printer can stay with any company for a while.
Obviously one of the major problems comes down to having a printer that does not print in colour. This is an absolute necessity for many companies and may be a reason that this printer is not as popular as it should be. Along with not having a fax or scanner, many people will find that, while this printer does do quite a few things well, it is missing some of the features that companies cannot live without.
