Xerox DocuColor 12 Printer Review

Expert review of the Xerox DocuColor 12 printer 21 April, 2011

Our Verdict:

Xerox DocuColor 12 toner cartridges

With a name that is synonymous with printing, Xerox had their work cut out for them as competition for the multi-purpose office printer continues to rise. Instead of adding in colour touch screens and high speed wireless network compatibility, Xerox took a look at the basics with their DocuColor 12. With promises as one of the quickest printers that is currently on the market, it is quite the anomaly.

Design

The unobtrusive exterior is quite plain when compared to other printers in this range. There are five input trays which can hold 500, 500, 500, 500, and 2000 sheets respectively which are accessed through slide out trays. Two output/sorting trays, both of which can hold around 500 sheets, extend from the right side of the printer while optional storage shelves can be attached to either side. The Xerox 12 toner cartridges are accessed near the back of the machine along with the Ethernet and USB plugs. The front lip of this laser printer holds a simple LCD screen as well as the most basic of control buttons. The flatbed scanner is perched directly above the controls as well as the access to the optional stapler and Automatic Document Feeder.

Advantages

The DocuColor 12 falls short of its 50 page per minute rating by about 8 pages. At 42 pages a minute with a huge supply of paper from the input trays, this printer was made to be a workhorse in terms of speed and quantity. As with any machine that is working at that speed jams may happen. Luckily, easy to find pop out hatches are clearly marked for these jams as well as the Xerox 12 toner replacement cartridges. Colour prints are much slower at about 12 pages per minute, but come out very vibrant with clean lines and no smearing.

Disadvantages

The major features also lead to some of the major disadvantages. Jams happen more frequently than anyone would want in a high-volume office, even for these speeds. The other problem comes down to network processing with the odd print that seems to get lost in the system and never come out. While this can be remedied in moments by simply resending the job, it was an oversight that a company like Xerox probably should have looked into.
