Replicator 2 Printer Review

Expert review of the Replicator 2 printer

Our Verdict:

The MakerBot Replicator 2 is a desktop 3D printer that creates physical objects to a high standard. It creates layers from the resin that can be inserted into it, and has a 100-micron layer capability. It offers an ideal way to get started in the process of 3D printing as it is simple to use and produces good results. However, the printer occasionally suffers from glitches such as a few uneven layers and a blocked nozzle.

Design

At just under 1 kg, the MakerBot Replicator 2 is not as heavy as it looks and is easy to situate on top of a desk. The dimensions of 49 x 42 x 38 cm make for a printer that is of a relatively convenient size, while still allowing it to produce handy-sized items. It has a sturdy build plate that is made of plastic.

Advantages

The quiet operation of the MakerBot Replicator 2 makes it an attractive piece of equipment as it will not cause disruption if situated in a working office. Similarly, it does not create any smell, as would be expected from a printer of this type. The documents that it creates are of a high quality and do not need to be followed up with any additional finishing steps as they will be immediately ready.

Disadvantages

At times the MakerBot Replicator 2 might misalign the layers, which could potentially cause a slightly off-kilter result. On some occasions, the nozzle might also become clogged and will need to be cleared before continuing, which can also be time consuming. It seems that some of the resin colours produce better results than others. Some users may prefer a glass build plate as opposed to the plastic one that makes up part of the MakerBot Replicator 2.
