Replicator Z18 Printer Review

Expert review of the Replicator Z18 printer

Our Verdict:

The Makerbot Replicator Z18 is a large desktop 3D printer. It is ideal for use in industrial sectors where the large build volume allows the creation of tall industrial concept models. Although it is not necessary to be an expert in 3D printing to use this device, some experience would be an advantage due to the time-consuming set-up process. The connectivity of the printer is excellent, with a USB and Ethernet connection, as well as the ability to print wirelessly from a range of devices and monitor it remotely. The build time is slow, but the quality of the printing is generally good with the ability to print in paper-thin layers.

Design

Of powder-coated steel construction, the Makerbot Replicator Z18 3D printer is a robust, stylish looking device with the dimensions of 49.3 x 56.5 x 86.1cm. It has a large build volume of 30.0 x 30.5 x 45.7cm. It takes PLA filament of 1.75mm diameter and has a nozzle diameter of 0.4mm. There is a control panel on the front which can be used to navigate the operations and an on-board camera with a 320 x 240 resolution can be used to monitor progress. Connectivity is achieved via a USB, Ethernet or wireless connection.

Advantages

With a wireless connectivity, the Makerbot Replicator Z18 3D printer can be controlled remotely and from a variety of devices. A large build volume increases the versatility of this device. A built-in camera allows printing progress to be monitored. The enclosed, heated chamber reduces curling. The smart extruder allows filament use to be monitored and will alert you when it is running low.

Disadvantages

The sturdy design of the Makerbot Replicator Z18 3D printer is let down by a less robust extruder. The build time is on the slow side with a long start-up time. Newcomers to 3D printing are likely to find the set up complicated and time consuming.
