Apple Colour Stylewriter 2500 Printer Review
Expert review of the Apple Colour Stylewriter 2500 printer
The Colour Stylewriter 2500 was considered one of the most advanced colour printers back in the day when networking options were still quite rare. The Apple Colour Stylewriter 2500 is a speedier device when compared to its predecessor, the Stylewriter 2400, but is outdated and sub-par in terms of overall performance when compared to today's models.
Introduced in 1996, the Apple Colour Stylewriter 2500 is modelled on Canon's Bubble Jet printer except for the industrial housing, the 8-pin mini-DIN serial port, and the firmware. The device resembles its sibling, the StyleWriter 2400, but has a better engine that makes it slightly faster than the previous model. Users can upgrade the device to support network connectivity. The Colour Stylewriter 2500 is lightweight and compact, weighing 3.1kg and measuring 8.3 inches tall, 9.2 inches deep, and 14.4 inches wide.
There is an option to integrate the Apple Colour Stylewriter 2500 into a network via Ethernet and LocalTalk. The optional colour ink cartridge for photo printing promises better graphics and picture output. The Apple Colour Stylewriter 2500 is also compatible with Apple Pippin, a gaming console.
The Apple Stylewriter 2500 only prints up to 5ppm in monochrome and 0.66ppm in colour. The ink cartridges are non-high-yield, with the black tank good for only 40 pages (5% coverage) and the colour tank good for 100 pages (7.5% coverage). The optional colour PhotoGrade ink cartridge means higher running costs. Also, the Apple 2500 Colour Stylewriter was first introduced back in 1996, so replacement parts may be hard to get.
