Canon MultiPass C545 Printer Review
Expert review of the Canon MultiPass C545 printer
A printer from a bygone era, the Canon C545 comes from a point when Mac and PC peripherals were not interchangeable. The lack of Wi-Fi and other new technology means this printer does not offer the flexibility that users can get from more modern machines, but it will still be able to handle basic printing requirements in addition to scanning, copying and faxing.
Design
The unit was designed to work with Apple Mac OS 8.5 version or later, but no support or driver was offered past OS 9. The printer has an integrated sheet-fed scanner, but there are no expansion bays or slots as part of the machine. The Multipass C545 has dimensions of 14.1 x 12.7 x 8.1 inches and weighs just 4.8Kg, making it just about portable.
Advantages
The printer can be used with a variety of media types including envelopes, standard paper, transparencies, and glossy photo paper. Document reductions and enlargements of 70 per cent can be achieved, and the small size of the printer means that it is ideal just for sitting on the desk at work or at home.
Disadvantages
The printer is not the fastest in the world, with a fax transfer rate of 14.4Kbps and a print speed of two pages per minute in colour and five pages per minute in mono. It also connects only via USB with no option for networking or Wi-Fi. It has a maximum capacity of 100 sheets of paper and the maximum resolution for both colour and mono printing is rather low at 720 x 360 dpi. It has a copying speed of three pages per minute and no support for auto duplex. This printer offers extremely limited operating system support, limiting you to a something along the lines of a power PC from a decade ago.
