    IBM 4400 Printer Review

Expert review of the IBM 4400 printer

    Our Verdict:

Designed for businesses, the IBM 4400 is a rugged thermal printer that simplifies the processing of receipts. The IBM 4400 thermal label printer is fairly fast and suitable for small to medium-sized environments, but there are problems with the print quality and the high initial cost of additional accessories, which could improve the machine's performance.

The IBM thermal printer 4400 looks like a plain but sleek box with a sturdy matte frame that measures 13.3 inches wide, 12.8 inches tall, and 21.1 inches deep. The 4400 printer weighs 19.5Kg and it runs on eight megabytes of RAM with four megabytes of flash memory. Connectivity is through serial and parallel interfaces. There is a small monochrome display screen on the control panel with six one-touch operational buttons.

The print speeds of the IBM 4400 barcode printer range from 480 inches per minute to 600 inches per minute. The 300x300dpi resolution is able to produce sharp lines. Four barcodes and 19 bitmapped fonts are included. The straight paper path helps reduce paper jam. The flash memory of the IBM 4400 can be upgraded to 10MB, while the RAM is expandable to 16MB. There is room for the optional bar code verification tool. Extra wide format paper and UP31 are also supported. Original IBM 4400 thermal label printer supplies such as the IBM4400 thermal ribbon prevent against printhead wear and poor performance.

The 4400 thermal printer is heavy and it is quite boxy and bulky for a standard counter. Data transfer can be sluggish because of the outdated interfaces. Media handling is very limited to thermal paper, labels, and continuous forms. Noisy operation is another problem with the IBM 4400. The print technology is not reliable when long-term storage is concerned because output may fade over time. This device is only compatible with Windows 95 and 98.
