Brother DCP-340CW Printer Review

Expert review of the Brother DCP-340CW printer 28 February 2014

Our Verdict:

Suitable for a small business or home office looking for a basic multifunction device with networking options, the Brother DCP-340CW all-in-one inkjet printer is specifically designed for modern working environments with its sleek appearance and time-saving features. The DCP-340CW features on-board card readers and an automatic document feeder, but it is not the most efficient choice for photo printing and fast scanning.

Design

Measuring 165mm tall, 345mm deep, and 373mm wide, the Brother DCP-340CW printer weighs 6kg and is fairly compact. The Brother DCP340CW is a flatbed colour printer, colour copier and colour scanner all rolled into one. The DCP340CW runs on 16MB of RAM, which gives it sufficient speed for printing, copying, and scanning. Its centrepiece is the ADF, which stands out on top of the flatbed scanner. Close to it is the simple control panel with the backlit LCD screen. The front panel consists of media card slots and the paper handling trays. There are ports at the back for connecting the DCP-340CW into a PC or a network via USB or Ethernet respectively.

Advantages

The copier is integrated with an automatic document feeder that can handle up to 10 sheets at a time. The PC interface is compatible with Ethernet and USB 2.0 for speedy data transmission. The LCD screen of the Brother DCP340CW multifunction printer is an improvement when compared to previous models because it is already backlit. Users can directly print from compatible memory cards like SmartMedia, CompactFlash, MMC, xD picture card, and SD using the Brother DCP-340CW. The DCP-340CW also offers integrated wireless network and scan & translate features.

Disadvantages

Although the input tray's capacity is 100 pages, the output tray can only handle 25 pages at a time, making printing in bulk a hassle. Some users have a difficult time configuring the Brother DCP 340CW printer for a wireless connection. Printing over a network tends to be slow and sometimes the insufficient memory causes lags. The Brother DCP340CW is not a good choice for photo printing. The scanner and copier are criticised for being sluggish.
