Canon MultiPass MP170 Printer Review
Expert review of the Canon MultiPass MP170 printer
28 February 2014
The Canon MultiPass MP170 promises good value for the user's money as an excellent multifunction device for the home office and a small business. It has a decent selection of features including direct printing from digital cameras and memory cards, and the entire device is affordable, too. However, Canon may need to improve on this printer's ink management and make high-yield cartridges for it.
The Canon MultiPass MP170 is designed to be an efficient multifunction photo printer with almost similar specs as its predecessor, but with more acceptable speeds and better performance. There is a PictBridge port and memory card slots on the front panel, and the main control panel features minimal and user-friendly controls and comes complete with a small status LCD display. The Canon MultiPass MP170 is surprisingly lightweight (less than 6 kg) and measures 7.2 inches tall, 15 inches deep, and 17.5 inches wide, so it is compact enough to fit a standard desktop.
The MultiPass MP170 print speeds are fast for an inkjet colour printer, ranging from 22 ppm in monochrome and 17 ppm in colour. The Canon MultiPass MP170 supports 7 different types of flash memory including SD memory card, memory stick, MMC, and IBM microdrive. The digital copier's resolution can be optimised up to 1200 dpi for accurate colour copies, while the scanner's interpolated resolution is as high as 19200x19200 dpi. It is possible to print directly from a digital camera, too. Print quality on the Canon MultiPass MP170 is very good, with text looking sharp and colour images very detailed.
This printer consumes 2 picoliters of ink, which is quite plenty when compared to some of its competition. The ink cartridges of the Canon MP170 are not exactly high capacity and high-yield, and they are pricey, too, making the printer quite expensive to maintain. Its ink system is quite outdated since it uses 1 black and the 1 tri-colour cartridge. The Canon MultiPass MP170 lacks a large colour LCD display for previewing photos and data from a memory card. This printer could have been better if it had Wi-Fi and built-in Bluetooth.
