  • Hi, excellent website - congratulations! The printer came with both BK and PGBK cartridges installed. Is it necessary to have two black cartridges installed, or can I just order and use the single high capacity black cartridge? Many thanks, Peter.

Black ink for Canon Pixma MG5450

The Canon Pixma MG5450 uses five individual inks and it's likely to require that all five cartridges are installed (including two black cartridges) and have some remaining ink in order to be able to print. The PGI-550PGBK cartridge contains pigment based ink for printing text whereas the dye-based Canon CLI-551BK black cartridge is more useful for printing graphics. Therefore, we recommend that you have both black cartridges installed in your Pixma MG5450 printer. For further instructions on cartridge configuration please consult your Canon Pixma MG5450 printer manual or download it using the following link: http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Consumer_Products/products/Fax__Multifunctionals/InkJet/PIXMA_MG_series/PIXMA_MG5450.aspx

  • I'm about to buy a Canon MG5450 printer. The specification says it uses five ink cartridges, you advertise saying it uses only four cartridges (CLI 551). Which is correct? Thanks for your help before ordering.

    Canon MG5450 printer inks

The Canon Pixma MG5450 inkjet printer uses five individual inks which are all listed on our website and available to buy as single cartridges. However, in the genuine Canon multipacks you only get four cartridges as the Canon PGI-550PGBK/XL cartridge is not included in the packs. We also sell compatible Canon MG5450 ink cartridges and our multipack of these items contains all five of the ink cartridges. • Will the Pixma MG5450 inkjet printer work with an iPad 2?

    Canon MG5450 printer connectivity

The Apple website does list the Canon Pixma MG5450 printer as being an AirPrint compatible printer. In the Canon MG5450 printer specifications on the Canon website it states that the printer supports Apple AirPrint interface and iPad 1. You might need to check with the manufacturer to confirm compatibility with iPad 2 devices.

  • What's the difference between PGI-550 and PGI-550XL cartridges for the Canon MG5450? Thanks.

Difference between Canon MG5450 black ink cartridges

The only difference between the Canon PGI-550 black cartridge and the Canon PGI-550XL black cartridge is the capacity. The ink type is exactly the same but "XL" cartridges contain more ink than the standard cartridges. The PGI-550PGBK black ink cartridge can print up to 300 pages whereas the PGI-550PGBKXL cartridge can print up to 500 pages. You can use either of these cartridges in your Pixma MG5450 printer.

  • Could you please confirm whether the following cartridge will fit in my Canon MG5450 printer which previously from yourselves didn't have the XL at the end of the number; "Compatible high capacity black Canon PGI-550PGBKXL printer cartridge (6431B001)"?

Black XL ink for Canon MG5450

Yes, any of the cartridges listed on this page work in the Canon Pixma MG5450 printer. The Canon PGI-550PGBKXL cartridge is a higher capacity version of the Canon PGI-550PGBK black cartridge and the only difference between them is the amount of pages they can print (they both contain original Canon pigment ink). We also do a premium brand compatible Canon PGI-550PGBKXL ink cartridge which is also compatible with the Canon MG5450 printer and is a cheaper alternative to Canon's cartridge.

Canon Pixma MG5450 Printer Review

Expert review of the Canon Pixma MG5450 printer 24 September 2013

Our Verdict:

Users in need of a reliable multifunction unit may opt for the modern MG5450. This impressive desktop printer, copier, and scanner has a maximum resolution of 9,600 x 2,400 dpi. Users can expect high-quality photos and enjoy borderless printing. This unit is equipped with both Wi-Fi and Ethernet for easy networking and printing from the cloud or mobile devices. The Pixma MG5450 does not have an automatic document feeder, even as an option.

Design

The sleek and black printer has a control panel with a large colour touch screen display. Below it is the output tray and disc tray for CDs, plus memory card readers. The Canon MG5450 can only handle 145 sheets at a time. Print speed can go as fast as 15 ipm for monochrome and 10 ipm for coloured.

Advantages

Not only is the Canon Pixma MG5450 stylish, it is also very functional and versatile. This unit can deliver good quality output on a wide range of media including discs. It comes with an automatic duplexer. The MG5450 also allows mobile printing and supports Apple Airprint. Users will have no trouble sharing the unit as it has Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity. They will also have an easy time operating the Canon Pixma MG5450, thanks to the 3-inch colour display. This unit features readers and PictBridge for direct printing from memory cards and digital cameras.

Disadvantages

The Canon Pixma MG5450 does not offer a fax machine. It also lacks an automatic document feeder. Expect this multifunction unit to be expensive.
