OKI Microline ML590 Printer Review

Expert review of the OKI Microline ML590 printer

Our Verdict:
star
star-filled

The Oki Microline ML590 is a monochrome dot matrix printer that can be upgraded to colour with an optional kit. It will cope well with the demands of a small or home office. Thanks to unique technologies allowing the printer to adjust itself to the paper type and calculate precisely where to place each dot, the results will be clear and free of smudging. With its low noise levels, this low maintenance, hardworking device will increase office efficiency. The standard printer is a no-frills machine offering monochrome printing only. Optional extras will increase the versatility, but will also increase the purchase price.

Design

The Oki Microline ML-590 measures 43cm x 37.8cm x 16.5cm and comes in an off-white design that will fit in unobtrusively with most office decors. Printer operations are managed from a control panel located on the front of the machine. A 24-pin printhead is expected to average two million characters. Print speed is 450 characters a second. The printer takes a black printing ribbon with the option of a kit to enable colour printing. Standard connection is via a parallel interface, but there is also the option for serial and Ethernet connection.

Advantages

With OKIsmart technology, the Oki ML590 senses paper type and automatically adjusts the head gap for optimum print quality. It can print on envelopes in the same way as any other paper type without jams. A sensor in the printhead calculates precisely where to place each dot, resulting in crisp, even text and smooth graphics. Its quiet operations and long-lasting parts mean nothing will hinder workplace efficiency. A cut sheet feeder allows for the unsupervised printing of letterheads and envelopes.

Disadvantages

As the colour module of the Oki Microline ML590 is optional, factor this into the cost before purchasing.
