Our Verdict:  

Dell 1720DN toner cartridges 

Dell is much more well known for the PC's and displays than their printers. The Dell 1720DN toner printer was one of their relatively few ventures into this market and it seems Dell took the same approach to making their printers as they do the rest of their technology, all business. It finds itself in a shaky middle ground between a home office printer and a small business or workgroup printer, but with a decent quality and speed for graphics, it may be useful in quite a few scenarios.

Design

The 1720DN is matte-black, boxy, and houses very few frills. This simplistic body weighs in at just over 11 kg and is not much longer or wider than an average-sized paper. On the top of the printer is the basic LED warning lights, a power button, a jam button, and a slanted output tray which can hold around 150 sheets. A downward facing handle offers access to the 250 sheet input tray, which can be expanded to a 500 sheet bin, and the Dell 1729DN toner cartridges. The DN model also features an automatic duplexer, 366MHz processor, 32MB of RAM, a USB plug, a parallel port, and an Ethernet plug for networking.

Advantages

The networking options and automatic duplexer make the 1720DN a much more preferable model over the base 1720. The print speeds are respectable at 21 pages per minute for graphics and 14 pages per minute with text. The reasonably priced upgrades offer a fully wireless networking card, up to 420MB of memory, an increased input bin, and very efficient high-yield Dell 1720DN toner cartridges. This means that for a company looking for a quick printer with room to grow, this could be the way to go.

Disadvantages

As always, it can be disappointing to see such a good printer marred by a lack of colour, faxing, or scanning options, but such is life. The quality of PowerPoint and graphical prints are generally good, but once into larger jobs a small amount of cross-hatching can occasionally be seen. A simple LCD screen or plug-and-print options for memory keys would have also made this machine much more flexible in the office or workgroup.
