Lexmark P4300 Printer Review

Expert review of the Lexmark P4300 printer 29 May 2012

Our Verdict:

The Lexmark P4300 is a simple but efficient all-in-one device for a small office and home user that demands more than just a document printer. The P4300 printer boasts colour copying and scanning, plus an optional PC fax, but the technology is quite outdated when compared to faster and network-friendly multifunction printers.

Design

The Lexmark P4300 is designed to be a simple but powerful photo printer with 4 built-in card readers that support at least 7 different types of memory cards. It connects to a PC via high-speed USB 2.0 to facilitate compatiblity with small networks. There is a PictBridge port in front so users can directly print from a digital camera using the P4300 photo printer. The entire device weighs 4.8kg, measures 7 inches tall, 13.15 inches deep, and 17.14 inches wide, and is integrated with thermal inkjet technology with the 6-ink system.

Advantages

Users can enjoy colour printing, copying, and scanning with optional PC fax from the Lexmark P4300. It prints colour documents and graphics well, and the flatbed scanner can accommodate thicker media like books and magazines and scan them at high resolutions of up to 19200 x 19200dpi. The Lexmark P-4300 is fairly quiet when in operation, and it supports a variety of media including iron-on transfers and transparencies. Built-in card readers mean ease in printing directly from a SmartMedia card, MultiMedia card, or Microdrive.

Disadvantages

The control panel looks overwhelming because of the number of buttons and status lights spread across it. There display screen is too small and it cannot be used for previewing images when printing directly from a memory card. Instead, users need to print an index page, which wastes ink. Speeds are inconsistent in the Lexmark P4300 – they're often slower than the claimed 22ppm in black draft mode and 15ppm in colour draft mode. Despite the 6 colour system, the Lexmark P4300 lacks the ability to produce true black text. Running costs are still high because of pricey cartridges.
