Epson AcuLaser C4000 Printer Review
Expert review of the Epson AcuLaser C4000 printer 21 April, 2011
Our Verdict:
Epson has raised the bar slightly higher with their AcuLaser C4000 as it is one of the first printers to use the AcuLaser Quadrabeam technology. This new printing technology, as well as a few other tricks, means that this printer can produce excellent quality colour prints at astonishing speeds. Along with a few energy-saving features, this machine should be in the running for any small to medium sized company that finds itself printing a large volume of colours and graphics.
Design
The first noticeable aspect of this printer is the sheer weight, which comes in at over 38 kg once it has been loaded to capacity. That being said, at only 63 cm at its widest point, in can fit in all but the smallest of office spaces. The media input tray can hold 600 sheets with the base model but be upgraded to just over 1,600 sheets. Just above the input cassette bin is the hatch to access the single-piece drum and the Epson C4000 toner cartridges which come exclusively in a specialty polymer base. The Hi-speed USB and Ethernet ports allow for wired networking while most basic functions can be controlled with a small LCD screen and a few navigational buttons. This printer is topped by the 250 sheet output well which sits directly behind the curved face.
Advantages
The Quadrabeam technology is not simply a flashy name, it delivers astounding speeds and quality. Four independent lasers, one for each colour, can produce excellent quality prints in both colour and black and white. The multiple lasers also produce upwards of 17 to 20 colour prints per minute as well releasing the first print in under 17 seconds from a cold start. The Epson C4000 cartridges are made from a new polymer-based ink which offers brilliant colours on any type of media imaginable.
Disadvantages
Outside of the beautiful colour prints, this printer can get somewhat expensive in terms of price per page, which is a bit high for most machines in this range. The other problem comes down to the speed of black and white text prints. These are in fact the same speed, and in some cases slower, than the 17 pages per minute that can be produced in full colour.
