The Brother MFC-J985DW is a combined printer-scanner that packs in all the flexibility and adaptability demanded from such kit in the networking age. Its sleek lines will complement any office space, and it will sit comfortably on a table or worktop. With its high-capacity ink cartridges and low-cost maintenance, it will be an invaluable workhorse for the team and prove itself from the start. Print remotely from tablets and smartphones, and connect the printer directly to the internet to scan from social media such as Facebook or applications such as Google Docs. Multiple users can connect to it using wired LAN, and it incorporates many other handy features.

Design

Weighing 8.5kg and with dimensions of 457 x 497 x 249mm, the Brother MFC-J985DW is a lightweight printer that can be moved about easily to the desired location. Its 12 images per minute mono and 10 images per minute colour print speeds enable it to rip through decent-sized batches, and its super-high-yield ink cartridges ensure that it won’t run dry in the middle of a job. It has a choice of network connectivity options, being enabled for LAN and wireless as well as for NFC, and the touchscreen from which the unit is controlled is a generous 6.8cm for clarity and ease of use. There’s also a useful facility for advanced paper handling via the manual bypass slot.

Advantages

The high-capacity ink cartridges used by the Brother J985DW mean that it has low running costs. The excellent connection choices also figure strongly in its favour, and the average photo quality is above average. Users can also scan and print directly from memory cards and USB drives, which increase its flexibility enormously.

Disadvantages

The Brother MFC-J985DW has a relatively low paper capacity, and the graphics and text on the LCD screen are slightly below par. The screen also tends to be slightly reflective in strong light.
