Epson LQ-400 Printer Review

Expert review of the Epson LQ-400 printer

Our Verdict:

The Epson LQ-400 printer is aimed at small offices with light to medium workloads that demand fuss-free printing. The LQ-400 ribbon printer is fast enough to maintain steady productivity without compromising the quality of the output, but some aspects of this machine are simply too outdated and unable to compete with what inkjet and laser printers could offer.

Design

The LQ400 features a compact frame with an understated, rugged appearance that resembles the ones from older but larger dot matrix printers. Because of the small footprint, the Epson LQ400 impact printer can easily be placed on a standard office desk without taking up too much space. All printer operations are configurable on-screen. The black Epson LQ-400 ribbon cartridge has an expected ribbon life of approximately 2 million characters.

Advantages

This resilient device offers longer printhead life, quieter operation, and high-yield ribbons. It is lightweight and works well for several hours without overheating. The 24-pin Epson LQ-400 dot-matrix printer boasts good paper handling options, which makes it easier for users to switch between single sheet feeding and continuous paper. It is easy to set-up the Epson LQ-400 and it is quite flexible in producing multi-part forms.

Disadvantages

The Epson LQ-400 forms printer uses dot matrix technology, which could be inefficient when compared to faster and newer printers. It doesn't offer many connectivity options beyond Type B USB 2.0 and the parallel port, limiting its efficiency to a single user only. The built-in memory of the Epson LQ400 matrix printer cannot be upgraded, and compatibility is limited to Windows operating systems.
