Our Verdict:

The Epson XP-8505 is a multi-function colour printer which incorporates a copier and scanner in the unit. It will work well in a home or home office, particularly one with a regular demand for photo printing. With six colour inks, the photo printing is of an exceptional standard with bold, vibrant chromatics. Documents are produced clear and free of smudges. Two input trays make the design a convenient one, but although the auto-deploying output tray is useful, it would be better if it was larger. The main drawbacks to this printer are the high printing costs, although for prints of this quality it could be argued they are worth it.

Design

With a sleek black design and a compact footprint measuring just 349 x 340 x 142 mm, the Epson XP-8505 will look stylish in a home or office. Managing and monitoring the printer operations is carried out on a 6.8 cm colour touchscreen on the front of the printer. It connects using a USB interface, a card slot or via Wi-Fi. Print speeds are 9 ppm in colour and 9.5 ppm in monochrome, while the print resolution is 5760 x 1400 dpi.

Advantages

With wireless connectivity and Epson apps, the Epson Expression Photo XP-8505 can scan and print from multiple devices including smart devices. It is possible to print directly from a memory card onto a wide variety of media. Two input trays (one for paper and one for photo paper) and an auto-deploying output tray saves time. The printer takes six ink cartridges, providing a high level of vibrant colour detail. The prints are long lasting, if stored in an album they can last for up to 300 years.

Disadvantages

The output tray on the Epson XP8505 is on the small side. The low yield ink cartridges result in higher printing costs and increased printer downtime for refills. Printing speeds are slow and there is no fax facility.
