HP CP1700 Printer Review
Expert review of the HP CP1700 printer
Aimed at graphic artists, the HP CP1700 is a wide-format inkjet printer that can be a good addition to a small office. It is network-ready and features infrared connectivity as wireless features, but is often described as a clumsily-designed and expensive device that amateurs and first-time users may find difficult to operate.
Design
This printer is designed for tabloid-sized media, so it is quite wide at 26 inches and heavy for a single-function inkjet printer, being 30 pounds. HP threw in an optional Ethernet interface and a built-in infrared port for wireless printing. The HP CP1700 runs on 16MB of memory, which is insufficient for high-volume printing. The control panel's LCD screen is only useful for letting users know about ink status and print errors.
Advantages
The HP CP1700 supports wide-format printing, thereby allowing users to produce 13x50-inch banners and 13x19-inch posters. Apart from the standard parallel and USB interface, the printer can accommodate infrared ports or print via a network. The HP CP1700 is compatible with more media types. Those who intend to use it for bulk printing can by an optional paper tray to accommodate an additional 250 sheets. The driver has a watermark feature.
Disadvantages
It can be difficult to adjust the HP CP1700 for other media sizes because of the flimsy sliders and badly-labelled stops. The documentation that comes with this printer is uninformative and not very detailed. The infrared port is somewhat outdated and slow when compared to other wireless printing options like Bluetooth, which the HP CP1700 does not have. Speed is rather sub-par at only 8ppm in monochrome and 7 ppm in colour. The optional paper tray is expensive.
