Our Verdict:

The HP Photosmart C3194 is a great photo printer for the casual home user, but can also be easily used in a small office environment on a dedicated computer. While it may not be suitable for large volumes of printing, it does produce high-quality prints.

Design

This HP Photosmart C3194 has been designed with those who use memory cards and pen drives to store images in mind, making it ideal for printing images taken with a digital camera. Memory card slots on the front of the printer are available for a number of different types of memory cards, but it is recommended that only 1GB cards and under are used. This device also features a letter-sized flatbed scanner for basic copying and scanning allowing up to 400 per cent enlargement. The printer measures 16.2 x 43.4 x 38.1cm, with a weight of just less than 8kg.

Advantages

Support for a wide selection of media is available including envelopes, labels, cards, transparencies, as well as standard and photo papers, making this a versatile HP Photosmart C3194. The maximum print quality is excellent with a resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi in mono and 4800 x 1200 optimised dpi in colour. Fast draft mode can also provide speedy prints at a rate of 24 pages per minute in colour and 30 in mono; however, maximum dpi mode is relatively slower at 0.4 pages per minute.

The HP Photosmart C3194 is a reasonable size and can be placed on the average desk without getting in the way too much. With a duty cycle of 3,000 pages, this printer should be able to adequately meet the needs of home users and dedicated computers in small offices.

Disadvantages

The HP Photosmart C3194 has no Wi-Fi or network connectivity, so will find limited use where multiple users require the use of a printer. The printer can only handle paper up to legal size and there is no support for secure digital high capacity (SDHC) cards.
