Kyocera TASKalfa 221 Printer Review

Expert review of the Kyocera TASKalfa 221 printer

Our Verdict:

For the small, busy, and growing office, the Kyocera TASKalfa 221 is an efficient multifunction machine that can deliver sharp and high-quality monochrome documents. Time-saving features include fast print or copy speeds and warm-up times, network printing, and a built-in duplexer. The device can help improve productivity and minimise running costs, but it is expensive to purchase and upgrade. It also lacks features that could affect its overall usefulness.

Design

The industrial and understated boxy frame of the Kyocera TASKalfa 221 measures 568mm wide, 607mm tall, and 594mm deep. Overall, it is a heavy device at 40Kg, and if it needs to be expanded, additional paper cabinets can be installed underneath. The standard paper capacity is 600 with two universal cassettes, while the multipurpose tray can handle 100 sheets. The output bin can handle 250 sheets, face-down. The device runs on 128MB of memory while being powered by a Power PC 440/500 MHz processor. There is a built-in hard disk drive.

Advantages

The Kyocera TASKalfa 221 has 256 greyscales to improve the quality of black-and-white graphics, and this enables text to be printed boldly and smoothly, too. Users can save time with a 17.2-second or less warm-up time from power on, and print speeds of up to 22ppm when printing on A4-sized sheets. The first copy will be ready in 5.7 seconds. The input capacity of the Kyocera TASKalfa 221 is upgradeable to 1,300 sheets, while the memory is expandable to 1152MB with an additional slot for 1GB.

Disadvantages

The control panel of the Kyocera TASKalfa 221 is in an awkward position, which can make viewing difficult. The busy cluster of buttons can make it overwhelming to operate, too. Users need to pay more for the Kyocera TASKalfa 221 if they want an optional duplex unit. The print resolution is limited to 600x600dpi, and only monochrome printing is supported, so the overall quality of detailed images might appear washed out or grainy. Operational noise is at 66.7dBA.
