An upgraded version of the older MP960 printer, the Canon Pixma MP970 adds networking to its already packed set of features. It can scan, print and copy, and boasts excellent photo printing. However, the Canon Pixma MP970 does not have faxing capabilities (typical of photo-centric units). It is also slow, which is surprising, considering how impressive the print rates of earlier Pixma MFPs are.

Design

The Canon Pixma MP970 is a basic-looking device with a front-yield paper tray for loading empty media as well as catching printouts. The scanner/copier still sits on top of the unit, and a small display can be used to preview print jobs as well as navigate the machine's menus. The LCD display also makes PC-less operation much easier. The Canon Pixma MP970 also uses Smart LED tanks, which contain lamps that blink to warn users that ink is running low.

Advantages

Some advantages of using the Canon Pixma MP970 include better photo prints and resolution as high as 4800x9600 dpi. The machine also accepts various memory cards and can be connected directly to digital cameras and camera phones. The scanner can handle slides and negatives and boasts 48-bit internal colour depth.

Disadvantages

The Canon Pixma MP970 is a bulky device; Canon claims that the extra space is necessary for their patented ink technology to work best. Ink price is still an issue. Print speeds are surprisingly slow, especially when printing high resolution images.
